Getting solid

After getting up early to attend a Zumba class, we rushed back for our first official inspection by the county.  We passed….or I should say Rob and his crew from Sound Concrete Solutions passed.

Early in the day, the electrician came by, too. We were verifying how he was going to bring the power into the house and up through the slab.  withelectricianAt this point we are expecting the plumbing and electrical work to just come up through the slab (called stubbing it out) and we will hope to finish it off ourselves.

It was an interesting experience watching them pour the concrete through a hose into all the forms.  That took several hours, pouring and smoothing. It was definitely a team effort with one person pouring, the second distributing with a team3 team2shovel, rough smoothing with a board and the finish smoothing with a trowel was done by the woman on the crew.

Someone told me that she was the wife of the owner. I had a conversation with her later and asked her whether she was a wife first or a cement finisher first.  She said a wife, but she grew up with her father in the cement business and her husband had learned from him.   The building trades in this area experiences a real turn down a few years ago and she ended up on her husband’s crew….when they could even find that type of work.  Over the past two years, business has been booming.  That fits with what I was told a few days ago.

They were trying not to order too much “mud” and they ended up being short about one yard and had to send the truck back out for more.

We’ve also been getting estimates for our new septic system and the folks at Power Trip Energy will be coming out on Monday to do an evaluation for solar.
